The AIGA Link Program connects Seattle area high school students with creative professionals through nine monthly workshops. In March, I was able to fly to Seattle and guest teach a bookmaking workshop using out-of-date encylopedias as materials. Not only were the students excited about the project, but the work they produced was brilliant, compelling and entirely inspiriational. Here are some of the photos.

Using cut letters, the student spelled out words in the pages.

This student was interested in fashion-design, and used the encyclopedias to physically illustrate a dress pattern.

A train made of book pages! The wheels even spin.

Inspired by the images in the Encylopedias, this book is part collage, part sculpture. One of the many unique pieces at the workshop.

The final critique! What a successful day.

Wow! After 244 years the Encyclopedia Britannica is ceasing to print. Coincident or not, this weekend I am flying up to Seattle to teach a workshop to high school students in The AIGA Link Program, using out-of-date encyclopedias to create new book structures. Perhaps it's a simple reminder of how interesting altered books can be, particularly when they involve uncovering layers of hidden meanings.

I am absolutely looking forward to seeing what the students come up with and can't think of a better time than now to transform a dusty old book into something treasured and new.

Wish us luck!

THIS SATURDAY 1/28: SWING ON BY PEOPLE'S GALLERY! COME SAY HI!

The article I wrote for Art Practical, Bookishness: A Conversation on Bay Area Book Arts, has been published.

In it, Nance O'Banion, Jaye Fishel and I discuss the role of book arts in the community and how it relates to history, conceptualizing ideas and the influence of online culture, among other things.

The article was written for Art Practical's Printed Matter Issue. Each article in this issue presents a fascinating mode of print culture which I feel particularly proud and excited to have contributed to.
